Founded in 1970 by Walter and Joseph Barry, Applied Development Company's earliest endeavors focused on the redevelopment and revitalization of New Jersey's urban centers. The name Applied was chosen to symbolize the company's philosophy of actually producing, rather than theorizing about, downtown development. Through its early years, the company rehabilitated thousands of rental apartments for low and moderate income residents. Working in communities throughout New Jersey, the company earned an enviable reputation by transforming crumbling tenements and obsolete factories into attractive productive residences, gaining credit not just for improving individual buildings but for the revitalization of entire neighborhoods, including the company's corporate hometown of Hoboken, New Jersey.
Applied's urban housing experience led it to recognize that a key to the continued revitalization of downtown centers required the development of quality, market-rate housing and related commercial services and retail shops to attract residents, with disposable income, to downtown areas. Accordingly, Applied committed itself to a core strategy of developing high quality residences and related retail centers in New Jersey's downtown areas.
During the 1990's, Applied capitalized on many opportunities in the marketplace, strengthening its position in core markets and increasing its annual growth dramatically. Today, led by David Barry, President of Applied Development Company, and Michael Barry, President of Applied Property Management Company, the organization is a fully diverse real estate firm developing an extensive range of residential apartments, condominiums and townhomes; retail and commercial centers; hotels and recreational amenities.
